GERDA (CZAJKA) HUGHES 1939 -- 2011

On Tuesday the 18th of October 2011 Gerda Czajka Hughes passed away leaving a multitude of people deeply saddened. She will be remembered for her bravery, her kindness, her sense of fun and her wonderful generous spirit. Her numerous friends will have memories of shared cups of coffee, outings and celebrations not to mention the treasured letters that would arrive to say "thank you," or "how are you," or "congratulations" or perhaps just "I am thinking of you."

That's what Gerda did, she thought of everyone and she gave of herself completely.

She never ever forgot a Birthday or an Anniversary. Her numerous letters were a joy, neatly typed and attached inside a beautifully hand painted card, they flowed with enthusiasm, words tumbling out just as she would in conversation. Her letters were to be treasured! Born in Germany, in difficult circumstances, you would never guess that English was not her first language as her spelling was impeccable, her grammar perfect and her understanding of the Irish turn of phrase was truly amazing.

I have seen her singing "The Jug of Punch" and a whole repertoire of Irish Ballads as she strummed away on her guitar, leading the company in a rowdy sing-song interrupted only by a never ending supply of hilarious jokes, I have seen her organizational skills, German efficiency and huge commitment to any task that she took on.

A talented Watercolourist, her dedication firstly to "the Market Artists" and then "The Limerick Art Society" has been recognized by the presentation of its two top awards, The Jim Kemmy Trophy closely followed by Honoury Membership of the Society.

All through her life, Gerda was a devoted and generous sister, a loyal and supportive wife, a reliable and dependable employee, a fantastic friend and a truly wonderful Mother. Her warm and caring nature lives on in her two beautiful daughters Heidi and Tanya who have been such a source of joy and pride, kindness and comfort.
